June at Harrison's: Soft-Shell Crab & Lump Crab Features
The seasonal summer seashore (say that five times fast!) returns to Harrison's this month with our soft-shell and lump crab features. Early summer is here and with it comes the culinary delicacy that is the soft-shell crab. Having shed its hard shell, the blue crab becomes entirely edible with its slight brininess balanced by the characteristic sweetness of lump crab. At Harrison's this June, you can enjoy them three different ways: sautéed picatta version served over linguini, a panko-crusted, Sushi-inspired preparation, as well as a more traditional, batter-fried styling.
For those of you who prefer to enjoy lump crab meat, we are also again featuring two additional crab dishes: Lump Crab Crepes in a rich Mornay sauce, as well as Ravioli "Oscar." You can also enjoy our delicious Maryland-style Crab Cakes available on our dinner menu.
Our Soft-Shell Crab and Lump Crab specials will be featured all June as availability allows. They will be offered daily after 4:30pm, in addition to our full Lunch and Dinner menus. (Occasionally we have sold out of soft-shell crabs, so if you know you'll be joining us for them, we encourage you to call ahead and "reserve" them.) Come taste the flavors of the season!
Local Helping Local: Thank You, Vale Wood Farms!
Here at Harrison's, we believe in buying local and supporting local businesses and organizations for a number of reasons. One significant reason has nothing to do with health or economy though; instead, it has more to do with the human side of matters. We truly believe that the more local businesses and organizations (and the individuals running them) help support each other (whether it's through purchasing their products, recognizing their contributions, or donating to the causes they represent), the stronger our local community becomes. This does have positive repercussions for our local economy, but it also has a positive impact on our human-level relations. Realizing we are all linked together makes room for acts of kindness that do not exist in all economies.
We had a chance to live this community dynamic not too long ago thanks to one of our local partners, Vale Wood Farms, our milk provider from Loretto, PA. You might have seen their delivery trucks chugging through our Happy Valley early in the mornings doing home milk deliveries -- the trucks that say "From Moo To You" and "Milk From Happy, Healthy rBST-Hormone Free Cows".
We had a simple problem: we needed a refrigerated truck to keep the extra food inventory for our busiest weekend of the year. The solution would normally be, "Rent one." Well we tried but to no avail. All the refrigerated trucks in the Centre region had already been rented. We thought about who we knew who would have a refrigerated truck that might be able and willing to let us rent and called our friends at Vale Wood Farm.. Fortunately, they had one we could use. Moreover, they would not accept money for it. They delivered it to us, no strings attached and saved our big weekend (you may have seen it parked outside our restaurant with its tell-tale black and white Holstein cow pattern). We couldn't leave them uncompensated, so we offered to provide catered food for their annual staff party, free of charge, to return their favor.
We believe in building a local community where the members support each other in good times and help each other in times of need. Vale Wood Farms is practicing that kind of local community elevated to the next level. Many, many thanks, Vale Wood, especially Carissa and Uncle Dan!
