Last Two Days of Day Boat Scallops
We have been featuring fresh Day Boat Scallops in July for quite a few years now, but we have a universal agreement this year: the scallops we've been receiving this year are the best we've ever had.
Weighing in at an ounce each, these jewels of the sea are huge, tender, fresh, and simply delicious no matter which preparation you choose. Just last week one long-time customer told us, "The Coquilles St. Jacques is the best thing we've ever had at Harrison's!"
Don't miss your chance to taste these sweethearts--they'll continue to be featured tonight and tomorrow night, (and if any remaining, over the weekend) but then they're gone for another year!
Summertime Italian Menu Begins Friday at 5pm
This one is a favorite! When we created our first menu items made from locally sourced ingredients sixteen years ago, the very act of doing so was in itself a challenge and a novelty. The Local Foods movement had yet to hit Happy Valley--in fact, it wouldn't catch on for several more years. We've been thrilled to see more and more restaurants begin to support local producers and regularly use local ingredients in recent years, but this creates a different challenge for us at Harrison's. With the Local Foods movement now more mainstream, how do we keep it interesting?
Our August feature menu is--at least in part--our answer to this challenge. Our Summertime Italian menu epitomizes our "Locally Sourced, Globally Inspired" motto. Taking the abundance of local ingredients available everywhere at this time of year--tomatoes, corn, garlic, onion, zucchini and summer squash, lettuces, herbs, peppers, eggplant, peaches--we transform them into something unexpected and delicious, all inspired by the renowned culinary fare from Capri, a tiny island off the coast of Italy. We design our locally sourced menus to surprise and delight you, and we feel confident that the fresh and local, creative and complex dishes from our Summertime Italian will do just that.
Here are some highlights of our locally grown summer Italian dishes... Panzanella Salad--a true Italian classic--with grilled peppers, tomato, zucchini, garlic, and summer herbs tossed with grilled ciabatta bread and a red wine vinaigrette. Clams Capri, or poached little neck clams in a white wine-garlic broth with fresh herbs. Ravioli Caprese--local Fasta tomato ravioli stuffed with ricotta and spinach and served with a sauce made with garlic- and pepper-infused Big Spring vodka. Pesce all' Acqua Pazza, a Sea Bass dish made in the traditional coastal Italian way of cooking the fish in salt water (traditionally sea water), along with fresh tomato, garlic, and lemon broth.
Take a sneak peek at the full menu, and plan to join us on Friday and throughout the month of August for all of our dishes inspired by the best of the summer harvest and by the summer Italian paradise, the Isle of Capri.
Local Foods Week: August 2-8
With local produce everywhere, August is the perfect month to celebrate Local Foods and the people who produce them! Centre County's annual Local Foods Week, a celebration to grow awareness of and support for local producers created by PASA (Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture), is running from Sunday, August 2 through Saturday, August 8.
The week is full of special events, but here are a couple ways Harrison's will be participating:
5th Annual Golden Basket Chef Competition
Tuesday, August 4, 2pm-4pm at the Boalsburg Farmers Market
Join the crowd to look on as local chefs prepare dishes made from farmers market ingredients in pursuit of the Golden Basket! Chef Harrison will be there competing again, and of course he and the other chefs will be offering samples of their delicious creations. It's free and open to the public. Come root him on!
Dine-In Fundraiser to Support PASA
Sunday, August 2 through Saturday, August 8 at Harrison's Wine Grill
Although we want you to go buy products directly from our local farmers, we also invite you to come try Harrison's twists on local foods while also supporting PASA. Dine in or carry out at Harrison's for lunch or dinner anytime from August 2 through August 8, and you will be helping PASA continue their education, support, and outreach programs. Simply mention your support of PASA or BFBL, and 20% of your check will be donated to PASA at the end of the dine-in period. You can participate as much as you like!
For the full list of Local Foods Week events, visit PASA's website.
Fall Catering...Foodie Favorites
Everyone has their favorites from Harrison's Catering, but we think that those of you who click into this email are most interested in delicious and interesting food. So here are some of the ways we make our catering special...
Unique Signature Flavor Combinations. Hands down, our customers' favorite sample menu is the Wine Country Reception or Tailgate, which can be served for any upscale/casual meal and incorporates many of our foodie favorites: Platters of Mango Salsa with Tostada Triangles, Grilled Balsamic Beef with Grilled Vegetables, Caesar Salad, Sesame Poached Salmon with Sesame Noodles, Local Goat Cheese with our own Fig & Olive relish served with sliced grilled chicken breast, Herb & Garlic Cheese, Chocolate Dipped Strawberries (and more)...
Customized menus. A recent one we designed especially for a customer appreciation event thrown by One on One Fitness for their health minded group: seasonal Spinach Salad with Mango Vinaigrette, Smoked Chicken Breast, Goot Essa Beer cheese with whole grain crackers, Grilled Portobello Mushrooms, Asparagus and Grilled Veggies platter, BBQ Pulled Pork, whole wheat Mac & Cheese, Edamame/Black-Eyed Pea/Mango Salad (and more)...
Attention to dietary restrictions within the group. It is a challenge to feed a group these days. There will always be someone who is gluten free, a couple of vegetarians, and someone else who is dairy free. Then add in nut allergies and the occasional vegan. We make it our goal to have each menu designed with all these requests in mind - and we always supply menu tags telling the guest what the food is and whether it is (v)(gf)(df) or +Nuts.
It's that time of the summer when you may be thinking ahead to events you'll be hosting in the fall. If you're interested in experiencing everything that makes Harrison's Catering a foodie favorite, please give our Catering Department a call. We'd love to get your event on the calendar and begin discussing menu options! Call Dan or Natalie at 237-4422.
